ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Three Brazilian men have been busted for trying to scam the MVD for drivers licenses. An alert state Taxation and Revenue Department employee spotted the ringleader of the group, Cristian Sobral, and it helped put the three men in custody.
State Police said Sobral was paid $3,000 by two younger Brazilian men, Dalmo Fuiza and Alisson Ferreira, to fly them to New Mexico from New Jersey. Sobral is charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony and the other men are charged with forgery.
On Friday afternoon, State Police said Sobral was trying to get drivers licenses for the men at the MVD office on 4th and Lomas. The agent from Tax and Revenue remembered seeing Sobral at the office a couple times over the past year with different people. The employee realize the address Sobral was using to prove residency for the two men wasn't where they actually lived. The bills he used, however, were real because investigators said Sobral paid some people to put the men's names on their bills.
State Police said they handled a similar case last week.
"[We] certainly we see our fair share of people trying to obtain licenses through the use of fraudulent documents," Major Pete Kassetas said.
State Police do admit the scheme was good, as Sobral made a credit card with the other men's names on them to show that the cards had been used before they applied for drivers licenses.
The candidates for governor have strong opinions on the topic of giving drivers licenses to illegal immigrants.
Democrat Diane Denish said this issue is an outrage and it demonstrates why the law is horribly flawed and must be replaced.
Republican Susana Martinez said she will fight to repeal the law and revoke thousands of existing licenses that have been given to illegal immigrants.
