Griselda Lopez is an illegal immigrant. She probably is a very nice, hard-working girl, but she said she knew she was here illegally, and her guardians knew she was illegal and made no effort to apply for her legal status. Yet The Aiken Standard, The Augusta Chronicle and TV stations portray her as a victim.
The real victims here are our school system and the taxpayers. Our schools are suffering from underfunding, a high student-teacher ratio and insufficient teacher pay. Also, more than half of Aiken County schools are on the "needs to improve" list. Maybe these things could be improved if our school tax dollars were used for the education of legal residents instead of our tax dollars being spread thinner to also educate illegal immigrants.
I was told I had to produce a birth certificate, a Social Security number and immunization records before I could enroll my son in school. Did Griselda provide this information? ... If she did, are these documents forgeries? If they are, who provided them?
If she did not provide the required documents, the principals of the schools involved should be held accountable. They contributed to the situation Griselda finds herself in. They could have stopped her before she entered first grade...
... We need to seal our borders now and force immigrants to enter the United States legally, become legal citizens, work at a legal job and pay their share of taxes. Then their children would attend our schools legally...
I was not in favor of school vouchers until now. This incident makes vouchers look great because I would have some control of my tax dollars and the school of my choice for my son's education. The No Child Left Behind Act does not include educating illegal immigrants - adults or children.
