Police: Phoenix Officer Shoots, Kills Man
PHOENIX -- One man was killed and a second in custody after an early-morning shooting Sunday involving Phoenix police, according to the Phoenix police department.
Phoenix police spokesman Sgt.Steve Martos said the shooting took place near 67th Avenue and McDowell Road at about 1 a.m. Sunday.
An officer tried to pull over a GMC Denali. When the driver took off, the vehicle hit a median a short distance away and became disabled, Martos said.
"As the officers approached, they noticed both the driver and occupant had exited the vehicle and were fleeing on foot," Martos said.
An off-duty officer who was inside a Quick Trip store across the street joined in the pursuit, police said. A 28-year-old Hispanic male was captured, while officers said they continued after the second man.
"They gave commands to stop, he refused. Ultimately, he took a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers. Both officers opened fire at this individual and he was declared deceased at the scene," Martos said.
Area resident Nancy Jacinto said tension on the south side has been high after a Phoenix officer was arrested for shooting an unarmed man to death and charged with second-degree murder, but she said she also hopes neighbors don't pass judgment on police.
"Well, if he's going for a gun then obviously it was self-defense and the cop(s) had every right to do what they did," Jacinto said.
Investigators said they believe the men were here illegally, which is why they have not been able to identify them.
