A Houston man was sentenced to a 30-year prison term Thursday after he admitted that he supplied cocaine to a Baton Rouge drug ring.
Chief U.S. District Judge Ralph E. Tyson also ordered Jose Ricardo Ramirez, 33, to forfeit $159,400 seized from a minivan he was driving to Houston in August 2007 after delivering 15 pounds of cocaine to Baton Rouge.
Ramirez admitted in a plea agreement he signed with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer M. Kleinpeter that he received the money from Willie Jones Jr., the leader of the local drug ring.
Ramirez also forfeited $85,186 seized from a Houston residence in December 2008.
Tyson said federal agents’ discovery of submachine guns, assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition at that residence factored into Ramirez’ lengthy prison term.
Federal prosecutors announced a year ago that Jones, also known as Gator, had imported between 44 pounds and 65 pounds of cocaine to Baton Rouge on a monthly basis at costs that ranged between $360,000 and $660,000.
The same people who sold that cocaine to Jones were buying firearms for sale in Mexico to gangs that include Los Zetas, prosecutors said.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has described Los Zetas as “vicious enforcers” who have kidnapped, tortured and murdered — including beheadings — law enforcement officials, innocent citizens, informants and rival drug gangs.
DEA officials also have publicly alleged that Los Zetas’ violence has been exported to Chicago, Detroit and smaller cities, such as Birmingham, Ala.
More than a dozen people have pleaded guilty in the Baton Rouge cocaine case, including Jones. He is scheduled to be sentenced by Tyson on Oct. 21.
