Green Rainbow gubernatorial candidate Jill Stein said she would hike taxes on Bay State “millionaires” in order to cut costs for working-class families - a plan reminiscent of President Obama’s controversial “spread the wealth around” comments during the 2008 presidential campaign.
“I wouldn’t say it’s spreading the wealth. I think it’s allowing working people to keep their wealth,” Stein said of her plan, which would increase taxes on big earners because she believes the “top 3 percent” highest incomes in Massachusetts haven’t felt the pain.
“Working families are paying twice the rate of millionaires, so I want to reduce the burden for people who have been overpaying now for about 15 years.”
Stein - who spoke with the Herald in the last of four State House Insight interviews with the gubernatorial candidates - also said she supports granting in-state college tuition to illegal immigrants as well as giving them state driver’s licenses.
“I don’t think people are illegal. I just think that
there’s a human rights issue here that just makes it wrong to call human beings illegal,” said Stein, who blamed the North American Free Trade Agreement for the boom in illegal immigration.
The Lexington resident vowed to stay in the race - even though she has struggled with fund raising and just yesterday was told that she failed to hit the $125,000 threshold in contributions of $250 or less needed to qualify for matching public funds.
Stein argued that her long-shot candidacy assures “that we can have a real democratic debate that doesn’t depend on selling out to the usual suspects - the health insurance lobbyists, and Cape Wind and the big utilities. We can have a real debate when people aren’t being paid to be silent.”
