When it comes to immigration reform, the Democratic Party remains out of touch with what the American public wants. People want to encourage people to come here legally, but the most important thing that true immigration reform must include encouraging people to stop coming here illegally. A real fence or a virtual fence are good signs, but not the best way to secure the true immigration reform. The best change that any administration could make in any policy is securing the border.
Unarmed Predator Drones: Really?
The Border patrol uses two unarmed predator drones to catch drug dealers and other illegal immigrants coming in from Mexico. The patrol has only a few planes to patrol all of the 2,000 miles of the United States-Mexico border. Similar drones are in use in Iraq and Afghanistan, but these drones are armed and attack terrorist targets. The drones used by the border patrol cannot do that. When the officials and the border patrol ask for more resources, the requests typically get turned down. In the meantime, Americans lose jobs to Mexicans who are willing to work under the table. The problem is not that Americans are unwilling to do these jobs, but that businesses must hire Americans legally.
True Immigration Reform: Enforcing The Laws
When states make efforts to enforce the laws, the reform most people want to see when it comes to immigration, the administration has gone out of its way to make an example of that state. People in the Obama administration have reported Arizona for human rights abuses rather than face the real issues.
The DREAM Act was a measure designed to gain extra votes from Hispanic groups rather than a measure that would actually fix the problem. Doing nothing or going in the wrong direction will only increase the anger. Americans don’t want to stop legal immigration. They want people who are not here legally to leave the country.
