CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Mecklenburg County commission is meeting right now and is expected to vote tonight on a measure involving the children of illegal immigrants.
Republican Bill James believes the county needs to report to the feds and the sheriff's office the names of illegal immigrants who apply for benefits on behalf of their U.S. born children.
James made public statistics from Mecklenburg County's Department of Social Services that show that U.S. born children of illegal immigrants received $2.65 million in taxpayer-funded public assistance in the month of July alone. The assistance includes things like welfare and food stamps.
Children born in the United States are citizens even if their parents are illegal immigrants.
James says money going to the children of illegal immigrants is in essence going to the illegal immigrants themselves, since they run the household.
In an email he wrote: "I say - how do you know they aren't terrorists living off of DSS federal welfare money? How do you know they are criminals using taxpayer welfare money to hide out?"
But DSS says it doesn't report illegal immigrants to ICE or the Department of Homeland Security or the sheriff's office -- except in extremely rare cases, state law makes it illegal. So what James is asking the county to do is essentially break the law to catch lawbreakers.
James has indicated he welcomes a lawsuit on this issue.
James is one of only three Republicans on the county commission. There are six Democrats.
James's measure is not expected to pass.
