Deming, New Mexico - After bringing you to the El Paso Port of Entry and to remote border sites where border patrol agents are getting big help from the National Guard, we’re talking to members of the New Mexico Guard about their experience and how their success might impact West Texans.
Traditionally the Deming, New Mexico, border patrol station is occupied by U-S Border Patrol Agents and those agents alone. But this week they're sitting alongside New Mexico National Guard Troops as they're mustered into service.
From Deming, troops are assigned various roles in the Border Patrol's El Paso sector, which includes, Camp Ramsey, near Columbus New Mexico.
"Three miles from the border, it takes them 15 minutes to get to some of the furthest stretches of this zone and less time to get to stretches that used to take them up to four hours", says the U.S. Border Patrol’s James Acosta.
Efficiency is as much a product of new innovation as it is teamwork.
These National Guard troops are taking over border patrol's administrative duties, freeing them to scan the land.
"This was a very smooth transition for us to come on to this mission and really affect the change", says Lieutenant Colonel, Jamison Herrera.
The Lieutenant and about 80 New Mexico National Guard troops deployed September 1st, and their impact is already taking shape.
Already 21 observations have been made. Those are sightings of possible illegal immigrants. Out of those, 14 people have been apprehended, carrying a combined 181 pounds of narcotics.
The key is that National Guard troops act as the eyes and ears of the operation. They spot the suspect, and then Border Patrol swoops in to enforce the law.
While September’s sightings and apprehensions occurred in New Mexico, they limit the possibility of illegal aliens entering Texas.
When entering the U.S. through New Mexico, some immigrants head west toward Arizona and California, some go due North and others travel east, toward West Texas.
"We actually do the early identification, some of the criminal analysis piece and allow some of their Border Patrol Agents to get out on the border and have a faster response time", says Lt. Col. Herrera.
In addition to the help the National Guardsmen provide on the ground, technology like the Forward Looking Infrared Camera is also of great assistance to the Border Patrol.
The camera is camouflaged and the number of cameras used along the border is considered classified information. Even the operator could not show his face on camera but he did explain FLIR camera procedures.
"My first move is to get a good bearing and location and then to contact the agent in the area. From there we make a plan of action on how to apprehend an individual,” explained the operator.
The cameras can see well into Mexico, even from here, three miles into the United States in New Mexico.
Between the technology and the additional manpower offered by the National Guard, the Border Patrol is now more equipped. And that's something Lt. Col. Herrera is proud to recognize.
"The bottom line, is we are here to support the border patrol to do this job better and make sure that the Mexico Border is safe and secure", says Lt. Col. Herrera.
