CORPUS CHRISTI - Three people, including a teenager and an eight-year-old, were taken to the hospital after police say 26-year-old Domingo Ollana rear-ended the van they were in.
It happened around 10:30 this morning on 19th Street. Police say Ollana decided not to stop there and neither did a man riding a bicycle who saw that accident.
Less than a mile away, Ollana parked the maroon vehicle and the bicyclist followed. When police officers arrived, they saw Ollana standing outside, just looking at the car. Police asked Ollana where the driver was and he took off.
"The gentleman took off running to the back of the house. We gave chase, he jumped the fence and we were able to catch him in the backyard after he jumped the fence," said Ofc. Arnold Guerra with the Corpus Christi Police Department. "The gentleman on bike that followed him, drove by and identified him as the man who had caused the hit and run accident."
Police say Ollana is an illegal immigrant from Honduras and he was arrested for failing to render aid and evading arrest.
It's assistance from citizens, like the man on the bike, that helped police catch the suspect.
"We need the help. Sometimes nobody wants to speak up, nobody wants to say what happened or who's involved and sometimes we need the help. I mean this time it was critical that we were able to apprehend this gentleman," said Ofc. Guerra.
The three people suffered minor injuries.
