PHOENIX -- Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies arrested 14 people Tuesday morning after serving a search warrant at Prime Cut Meat & Seafood Co., a Phoenix meat packing business.
Five of the arrested were accused of using the names, birth dates and Social Security numbers of other individuals, deputies said.
Deputies said they were acting on tips that the business at 2601 N. 31st Ave. was hiring illegal aliens.
"It is a serious crime they've committed," Arpaio said.
"They haul these people away like their dogs. It's heart wrenching," said Chad Poppen, General Manager of the plant.
Poppen said he's not the villain he's being portrayed to be, and his employees, snatched in a raid this morning, are not dangerous threats to society.
"One of the people that were taken away today gave her house keys to one of the girls in the office and asked her, pleaded with her, 'Please,' could she go to her house and get her 14-year-old son when he gets home from school because there was no one there and she doesn't have any other family," said Poppen.
Most of the employees arrested were long time employees, with more than 10 years at the company. They were employed before the e-verify system went in place.
"Legally, if you read what it states in the e-verify system, I am not allowed to go back and check on these employees that have already been employed with me," said Poppen.
"The people here who are here illegally are taking up jobs that U.S. citizens could have," said Arpaio.
In fact, after the raid, more than 80 people showed up to apply for the newly vacated spots. Poppen said nearly all of them are Hispanic.
"Now, I'm at a point where if somebody is Hispanic, can I hire them without putting myself at risk?" asked Poppen.
Alma Raygoza's sister was one of those arrested.
"She's not gonna get deported. She got arrested. I guess she didn't have her IDs on her, but she's gonna stay here," Raygoza said.
Instead of enforcing the laws of the state, Raygoza believes Arpaio's motives are much different.
"He's just here to send them to Mexico," she said.
Arpaio said he's simply doing his job.
"We're gonna be doing our job, see what happens and put a dent in this illegal immigration problem, especially those that are here working in the workplace illegally," Arpaio said.
The employees arrested are either still in the county jail, being detained by I.C.E., or already on their way back to their home country. Sheriff Arpaio vows to carry out more workplace raids. Currently, there is no mechanism in place to make sure the children of the arrested are safe and being cared for.
