Two legislative candidates sparred Tuesday night at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln over education funding, health care reform and a state law that gives in-state tuition to children of illegal immigrants.
The Association of Students of the University of Nebraska hosted the debate. Incumbent Sen. Danielle Conrad is facing Chad Wright, a small-business owner, for the District 46 seat, which serves much of northeast Lincoln.
Conrad said she supports the state immigrant tuition law, while Wright said he opposed its passage. Conrad said she understands the burden illegal immigration can have on communities but said immigration is a federal and not a state issue.
"This is an education issue, not an immigration issue," she said of the law. "We should also be careful not to punish children for the actions of their parents."
Wright said the law is unfair to out-of-state students who now must pay more to attend college in Nebraska than illegal immigrants.
"For some odd reason, we've carved out that exception for illegal immigrants," he said.
Conrad emphasized her efforts to support higher education within the Legislature, while Wright promised to work hard for small-business owners and working-class northeast Lincoln residents.
Asked whether they agreed with Gov. Dave Heineman that paying for health care reform will force the state to cut education funding, the candidates took opposing views.
Wright criticized Conrad for supporting federal health care reform, which he said would cost Nebraska hundreds of millions of dollars to implement.
"Taxpayers are the ones that are getting the raw end of the stick," he said. "I want voters in northeast Lincoln to know that I will work hard for them."
Conrad said she didn't agree that increased health costs would require education funding cuts.
"It's always a matter of setting priorities as far as budgeting," she said. "I'm proud of the work I've done in the Legislature."
