PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- State Rep. Peter Palumbo said during an anti-illlegal immigration rally at the State House on Friday that his proposed immigration law would protect immigrants.
Two dozen people dressed as clowns disrupted the rally, sponsored by Rhode Islanders for Immigration Law Enforcement, and The Minuteman Project, a "civilian watch group" that monitors the flow of illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Palumbo is proposing legislation identical to the controversial Arizona immigration law known as SB 1070, considered the most restrictive in the country's history.
"We're doing the right thing for the people who are trying to come here legally because there's a new type of slavery out there," Palumbo said.
The clowns filed through the State House metal detectors at around 9 a.m., as Jim Gilchrist, co-founder of The Minuteman Project, was addressing fewer than two dozen people. Gilchrist was saying, "I wanted to be clear: no one here, in my opinion, is using this platform to engage in what our critics might call racial supremacy ..."
At that point, the clowns outnumbered speakers and supporters.
They staged a satire, carrying signs that said, "This Circus is for Clowns Only!" and yelling, "Peter Palumbo is Clown in Chief!" They cheered on the speakers for 40 minutes before leaving and then dancing on the State House patio.
Palumbo talked about how illegal immigrants are taken advantage of by smugglers and employers who underpay them.
He said that those who want immigration reform are fighting the right fight and said "70 to 80 percent of people in the country want border protection. They want border security and they want E-Verify."
About 50 people from RIILE, the tea party and their supporters had gathered by the time the rally ended at noon. RIILE executive director Terry Gorman said he'd been expecting about 500 people, but the weather forecast -- high winds and rain -- may have kept many away.
