RED BAY, AL (WAFF) – Authorities arrest two illegal immigrants in two weeks in Red Bay for rape and molestation, and the community says it's fed up.
"It's pretty bad from all that I've seen," said Red Bay resident Denise Hutcheson.
The small Franklin County town has watched as two Guatemalans have been thrown behind bars for serious crimes committed against the community.
"We need to send them all back to where they came from," said one resident who declined to give his name.
"I've lived here all my life," said Hutcheson. "It's changed dramatically more and more have moved in."
Red Bay Police Chief Janna Jackson, though, refutes the rumors. Her officers don't see or arrest as many illegal immigrants as the general public thinks.
"We run across some, but we don't have as big of a problem with undocumented people in this area as other areas do."
According to Jackson, the two high profile arrests raised safety concerns, so to squash them the police department added more patrols to the streets.
"We just hired two new patrol officers," said Jackson.
Residents hope it's not too little too late. "It's just getting really bad people have to watch their kids a little closer," said Hutcheson.
The chief, though, believes its only a coincidence their last two major arrests were both illegal aliens. "These crimes are committed by any nationality, and it just happened that it's been two Hispanics," said Jackson.
