Do we need illegal immigrants in the U.S.? Most people complain about them being here. A few people are glad to have them, but do they really serve a purpose or are they just taking away from the people who are here legally.
Problems arise because of their illegal status. Illegal immigrants pay little or no taxes, but still get medical treatment and their kids still use our schools. Households headed by illegal aliens imposed more than $26.3 billion in costs on the federal government in 2002 and paid only $16 billion in taxes, creating a net fiscal deficit of almost $10.4 billion, or $2,700 per illegal household (Camarota, 2004).They also take jobs that people who are here legally could have, this would lower our unemployment rate. A recent study showed that competition with immigrants accounts for a significant share of the decline in teen employment (Camarota, The Decline in Summer Youth Employment: New Study Examines Immigration's Impact on U.S.-born Teens, 2010). They are estimated at between 4 and 5 million illegal immigrants in the United States, which is about 1.5% of the population (Tapinos). That is a lot of jobs that could be done by Americans. The opposition has some good points for not wanting illegal immigrants in this country.
Next , let us look at the reason we need illegal immigrants. Most of the unskilled labor they perform, Americans do not want to do. We do not want to be farm laborers. We do not want to pick up garbage. And we do not like physical labor. Somebody has to do these jobs and we just don't want to. We demand higher wages for the work we do, but we do not want to pay the higher prices that come along with it.
Illegal immigrants do serve the purpose of keeping prices low, but at the same time they depress wages. We have to ask ourselves do we want the lower prices or are we willing to do the work for a higher wage but an increase in cost. Another option is to come up with a way to tax the illegal immigrants and let them help our economy grow. We need a solution that everyone can live with and does not hurt the economy.Works Cited
