BAD AXE — Illegal immigrants have been a thorn in the side of federal and county officials at a farm owned by Johannes M. VerHaar, 49, and his wife, Anthonia M. VerHaar, 47, in Bad Axe at least since 2007, according to newspaper archives.
The married couple was indicted Wednesday morning in the Eastern U.S. District Court in Bay City on one count each of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government.
State Police Detective Sgt. Mark Krebs said the couple is suspected of illegally hiring undocumented immigrant employees at their dairy farm, Aquila Farms LLC.
At least 18 illegal immigrant workers were arrested at the farm during two raids in 2007, at which time the VerHaars — originally from the Netherlands — weren’t U.S. citizens themselves.
It is unclear if they have since attained U.S. citizenship.
Johannes VerHaar threw a handful of dirt at a Bay City Times reporter and photographer, who were inside their car, when they attempted to interview the farmer after an incident that occurred in May of 2007.
Sgt. Krebs said no illegal immigrants were taken into custody during Wednesday’s arrest, but federal officials interviewed many of the workers and recorded their personal information.
He said there were “out-buildings,” including a trailer and a house, where an unknown number of farm workers have been living.
