An all-Republican committee of the General Assembly will begin meeting this fall to develop legislation aimed at curbing illegal immigration in Georgia.
The 14 Georgia House members and senators, appointed by House Speaker David Ralston and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, will be given free rein to examine a wide range of potential solutions, the two legislative leaders said in a joint news release.
Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, and Cagle, the Senate’s presiding officer, said the need for a state-level
committee stems from the failure of the Democratic-controlled Congress to come to grips with illegal immigration.
Republican majorities in the General Assembly adopted comprehensive legislation targeting illegal immigrants in 2006.
The law requires government agencies and private companies seeking government contracts to verify the immigration status of prospective employees. Also, applicants for certain public benefits in Georgia must prove they are in the U.S. legally.
While the Georgia law was widely considered one of the toughest anti-illegal immigration measures at the time, Arizona has stepped forward since then with a stricter law giving police the power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally.
The Obama administration is challenging the Arizona statute in federal court.
The chairmen of Georgia’s Joint Committee on Immigration Reform will be Rep. Matt Ramsey, R-Peachtree City, and Sen. Jack Murphy, R-Cumming.

United States Code, Title 8, Chapter 12, Subchapter II, Part VIII, §1325 - "Improper Entry by Alien," any citizen of any country other than the United States who: 1) Enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers; or 2) Eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers; or 3) Attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact; has committed a federal crime.
Violations are punishable by criminal fines and imprisonment for up to six months. Repeat offenses can bring up to two years in prison. Additional civil fines may be imposed at the discretion of immigration judges, but civil fines do not negate the criminal sanctions or nature of the offense.
