Presently there are well over a 100 sanctuary cities and towns in the US. These are cities where their councils and or mayors provide refuge to illegal aliens. Law enforcement is heavily restricted in dealing with the Federal law breakers. These cities are in direct violation of Federal law yet the Federal government takes no interest in dealing with these cities and yet no Federal judge has stepped in to countermand these local decrees.
Federal Immigration Reform And A State’s Protection Under The Tenth Amendment
Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona back in April signed into law making it a state crime to be in the country illegally and requiring local police to enforce federal immigration laws. The State of Arizona’s law mirrored almost verbatim the Federal law and low and behold U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton chimes in at the bequest of the Obama administration stating the immigration law intruded upon federal immigration enforcement.
How Can State Initiatives Carry More Weight
Now Governor Brewer’s actions to some may be courageous. Her own state has at least 4 sanctuary cities with two of Arizona’s larger populated of Phoenix and Tucson among them. The Governor holds the purse strings of the state. To give Arizona’s popular law some teeth, what would really be courageous is, in spite of the Federal judge’s ruling is to go after the sanctuary cities in the State. Pull every single State funded dollar budgeted from those cities with the exception of course of infrastructure, law enforcement and emergency services.
Taxpayer Dollars
State and Federal tax payer dollars are still flowing into the sanctuary cities. Since the State of Arizona has challenged the White house, several other states are following suit putting forth state legislation similar to that of Arizona even after the Federal judge’s ruling. States once again declaring their sovereignty under the 10th amendment is going to send a message to sanctuary cities and to supporters of amnesty for illegals in the guise of immigration reform by hitting them in the wallet.
