LAS LOMAS — A man faced a murder charge Thursday after a fatal drive-by shooting in this small Starr County community.
Starr County sheriff’s deputies arrested Juan Jose Arrellano, 29, hours after the shooting death of Jose Luis Diaz, also 29. He was later charged with murder and remained at the Starr County Jail Thursday afternoon in lieu of a $1 million bond.
The suspect told deputies he was picked up by three unknown individuals at his home about 10 p.m. Wednesday who told him to drive his black Ford truck by Diaz’s home, Starr County Sheriff Rene Fuentes said. The three suspects then threw beer bottles at the victim’s home until he came outside.
As Arrellano drove away from Diaz’s house, the victim followed in a black Ford Escape with three other passengers. The suspects pulled over at North Blanca Road and all four fired at the victim, Arrellano told investigators.
Another victim, Alfonso Palacios, 30, was shot in the arm. Emergency crews rushed him to McAllen Medical Center, where he was later released.
Authorities said have not learned what motivated the men to kill Diaz.
If convicted of murder, Arrellano could face up to life in prison and a $10,000 fine.
