Sheriff's officials said two alleged Azteca gang members went to a house in Berino, N.M., to collect a "drug tax" on Friday night but a man at the home told them they had the wrong house and that his family was hard working and didn't deal drugs. The man then was assaulted. His wife called 911.
A deputy later chased a vehicle. When it stopped, two men ran. Angel Renteria, 36, of Sunland Park, was arrested after being shocked with an electric stun gun because the deputy thought he might have a gun. He had a cell phone.
Renteria, who denied knowing anything about the beating, is accused of assault, resisting arrest and several traffic violations.
