Investigators: Man fights off alleged machete-wielding kidnapper
NEAR WESLACO — Angel Alberto Lopez found himself in an abandoned house, but didn’t know where he was.
He freed himself from the rope that bound his hands after the man guarding him had left the room, then hid in a closet and waited for his guard to return.
When the man came back, Lopez emerged from the closet. The man lunged at him with a machete, landing a blow on Lopez’s hand.
Lopez grabbed a piece of wood from the floor and smacked the man on the head. He jumped through an opened window and was later found by police.
Texas Rangers investigators would not release details about the alleged aggravated kidnapping on Wednesday. But Lopez’s story — a tale that has become all too familiar in the Rio Grande Valley over the past several years — emerged in a criminal complaint after state investigators arrested Jose Sanchez Martinez on Monday.
Lopez told investigators he was traveling with Martinez, 55, in his white Honda last month near the intersection of Mile 14 North and Mile 6 near Weslaco, the complaint states.
Martinez stopped the car. Two men came from behind, took Lopez out of the car and pointed a handgun toward him, the complaint states. The men tried to bind his arms with duct tape as he struggled. Eventually, they tied him up with a rope and stuffed him into the Honda’s trunk.
The men took Lopez into the abandoned house, where he eventually freed himself from the rope and managed his escape, the complaint states. It is unclear how long he was held against his will.
Texas Rangers and Department of Public Safety investigators arrested Martinez on Monday during an undercover surveillance operation.
Martinez confessed to his part in the kidnapping and implicated Miguel Sanchez, 57, as the man he allegedly hired to find other men to kidnap Lopez, the complaint states. Investigators found and arrested Sanchez on Tuesday.
During another undercover operation Tuesday, investigators arrested Freddy Gonzales, 28, and Charles Ray Hillis, 41, in connection with the alleged kidnapping.
Sanchez confessed to the kidnapping, the complaint states. He told investigators Martinez asked him to help collect an unknown debt from Lopez. Sanchez said Hillis recruited additional manpower to carry out the kidnapping, with Martinez’s white Honda to be given to the men as payment.
Investigators continue to look for an unidentified Hispanic male who allegedly participated in the crime.
Gonzales, Martinez and Sanchez have been formally charged with aggravated kidnapping. Bond was set at $100,000 for each man.
Hillis, who denied knowledge of the kidnapping, is set to face the same charge at an arraignment hearing scheduled for today.
Aggravated kidnapping is a first degree felony that carries a maximum life sentence and up to a $10,000 fine upon conviction.
