Teen charged in Pharr drive-by shooting
PHARR — A teenager faces a charge of criminal attempted murder in connection with a drive-by shooting Sunday that landed one person in a local hospital with a gunshot wound.
Jose Antonio Hernandez, 19, was arraigned Monday morning in Pharr Municipal Court, where bond was set at $250,000.
Authorities also arrested a juvenile in connection with the incident. He was expected to face the same charge, but it was unclear Monday whether he had been arraigned yet.
Hernandez was driving a gray Chrysler 300 about 6:15 p.m. Sunday on the 500 block of East Hawk Avenue when someone in the left rear passenger seat fired four shots from a 9 mm gun, striking a male who was standing in front of a home at 521 E. Hawk Ave., according to the criminal complaint. The victim, who police have not publicly identified, was hit once in the leg.
Witnesses reported the vehicle description and license plate number to authorities, who located the car and confirmed with the witnesses that it was the same one used in the shooting, according to the criminal complaint.
Police believe there were two others in the vehicle at the time of the shooting, but they have not publicly identified those suspects.
It remains unclear whether the suspects knew the victim.
Criminal attempted murder is a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 upon conviction.
