Pharr man found stabbed to death inside home; truck missing
PHARR — Gilbert Cardenas stood in the street as children walked home Wednesday afternoon from Raul Longoria Elementary School.
Cardenas, 24, waited alongside his family as a cleaning crew mopped up what was left from his father’s fatal stabbing that morning.
“It’s hard,” Cardenas said. “We’re just trying to get all his things together.
Pharr police said a Reynosa man stabbed his father, Israel Cardenas, and then took his truck across the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge.
Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace Rosa Treviño said she pronounced Israel Cardenas’ death about 8 a.m. Wednesday. From the dried blood on the living room floor, it appeared the two stab wounds — one in the abdomen and one in the heart — had occurred several hours before police responded at 6:44 a.m. Wednesday.
“The blood was completely dry on the floor,” Treviño said. “It was horrible.”
Pharr police Lt. William Edmundson said investigators have not identified any other suspects in the apparent murder. No one else was home when Israel Cardenas was found dead.
Police declined to say who discovered the body and reported it to authorities.
Investigators said the suspect in the case, Valentin Ramirez Martinez of Reynosa, was seen on surveillance footage driving the missing black 2001 Ford F-150 pickup across the bridge later Wednesday morning.
“I guess he thought (Ramirez) was a friend,” Gilbert Cardenas said of his father. “But he would help everybody, so who knows?”
The younger Cardenas said Ramirez had been staying with his father, helping him fix up a broken van.
Ramirez is believed to be age 25 to 27 and has not been seen since he crossed into Mexico, police said.
Treviño ordered an autopsy of Israel Cardenas’ remains and said she was troubled the homicide occurred within sight of an elementary school.
“Thinking about the things that we see, all these crimes around our elementary schools and school districts, it is so horrifying,” she said.
Gilbert Cardenas said his father lived at the house alone. He was a retired migrant worker who regularly enjoyed cooking out in his front yard, offering barbecue plates to neighbors, his son said.
“He just gave everybody the benefit of the doubt,” Cardenas said. “He trusted everybody, I guess. So yeah, bad things can happen to good people.”
