After truancy violations, Edinburg man arrested as part of burglary ring
NEAR EDINBURG — Sheriff’s deputies arrested two men connected to an alleged burglary ring Wednesday afternoon — including one jailed on truancy violations by an Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace.
Joel Paniagua, 19, and Francisco de Luna, 18, were formally charged with burglary at an arraignment Thursday morning at the Hidalgo County Jail.
The arrests came after deputies responded to a burglary in progress at 1306 San Jacinto Ave., northeast of Edinburg, about 4 p.m. Wednesday, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said in a statement.
A woman told investigators she saw two men carrying her TV out of her house alongside another man when she arrived at her home. Upon seeing her, the suspects ran from the property.
Victims said they recognized two of the suspects — Paniagua and Abraham Guerrero, 21 — and yelled at them to stop.
A helicopter and canine unit responded to help look for the men. During the search, deputies received another call of a man burglarizing a storage shed at 6513 South Trail Drive — in a nearby subdivision at Tower and Iowa roads. Deputies arrested the man.
Deputies arrested Paniagua and de Luna in connection with the burglaries. Guerrero, described by investigators as a criminal illegal immigrant, remains at large.
De Luna has a criminal history that includes misdemeanor arrests on possession of marijuana and failure to appear.
On the failure to appear charge, de Luna was eventually sentenced to more than three months in jail after Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace Mary Alice Palacios had him arrested after he failed to pay more than $10,000 in fines from high school truancy violations. An Hidalgo County court-at-law judge later reduced that sentence to five days.
Palacios was indicted in July on charges of official oppression after a Monitor investigation revealed de Luna’s and other cases of teens jailed under the failure to appear charge. Her next court hearing in that case is set for Nov. 16.
Paniagua, meanwhile, has convictions for evading arrest, unauthorized use of vehicle and misdemeanor possession of marijuana, court records show.
Treviño said the sheriff's office Awareness, Prevention and Enforcement project helped make the arrests, with tactical patrol deputies interrupting the burglaries in progress Wednesday afternoon.
Deputies recovered a 42-inch Samsung television, a PlayStation 3 game console and a Craftsman weed whacker during the investigation.
